THE CITY – A Synopsis

Ok. So, THE CITY, What is it? and what is it for?

I’m going to answer these two questions in reverse.

    Whats it for?

THE CITY is the means by which I mean to return to having some kind of creativity in my life, celebrate the vision and abilities of others, and act as a show case for the imagination of myself, and of anyone else who cares to join in.

    What is it?

The Idea of THE CITY is to create an evergrowing, everchanging representation of an urban area. I’ve long been interesting in the imagery of Cities, From the grand, antiquated Cities of Europe, to the Super-Modern Towering structures of Cities in the Far East. Not mostly because of what they are for, but how they look.

The idea of this came to me whilst reading William Gibsons Idoru, which features the concept of what is named by character therein as the “Walled City”, a Virtual sanctuary, baring a likeness to Kowloon, The now demolished conurbation in Hong Kong, that bore the same name. One of the aspects of this Walled City, was how Gibson described the Individualisation of the “inhabitants” areas. How would people alter, or style their environments, given the chance?
Consequently this gave me the idea for a works, which started initially as an idea about people defining their own spaces Then, whilst looking at a rather splendid nighttime picture of HongKong, I had a second idea for a project. What about People defining their own Structures? How would Hong Kong, Los Angeles, London or Cameroon look, had each building been placed Randomly, without regard to locale or timeperiod? What would a city look like that combined kilometre tall towers of glass, and 15th century townhouses?
At first, I was planning on doing it alone, Sketching up and then 3D modelling structures onto a map of no place in particular, Then I realised it might be more fun, and more interesting both to myself and for other people, If they had input into it.

What do I want from you?

Youuuur Sooooouls. No. Not really. I have 30 in a sack, and they are nothing but trouble.
If you are interested.
Twitter, or PM me. At some point shortly, I will ask people who do so, for their “Designs” for a building, and a room. One building, and One room. What Rooms and Buildings, is entirely upto you. I want people to throw forward something they would want to see in THE CITY, for good or bad. Personal, or impersonal, its upto you. A real building, or something you drew on the back of Napkin. If you can’t/don’t want to devise whole objects, then put forward your ideas for features. Structural design, Bas Relief, how you’d want it representing, Whatever you fancy doing.

Once theres some material, I can start to build the City up through sketches, 3D modelling and animation, Texts and maybe even sound, and it’ll be something that will hopefully be a credit for anyone who cares to take part.

This is very interesting to me. I will be keeping a close eye on this project, and possibly contributing, depending. I have a lot of architectural, community space, arco-block style ideas I haven’t completely worked out yet that may make an appearance.
